A lasagna is not ordered. It is commissioned.

The short version

A one owner delivery kitchen in Brazil, selling lasagna in aluminium trays, hot or frozen.

The brief arrived with its own aesthetic already chosen: Italian, mafia, and then three words that contained the entire problem, sem ser bobo. Without being silly. I wrote the world, the naming system, the identity, the editorial line and the laws, directed and generated the imagery, and cut the launch film. The AI was written into the contract from the first meeting, with the base prompt handed over as part of the delivery.

Não seguiam receita dos outros, criavam as suas, do seu próprio estilo:

They did not follow anybody else's recipes. They made their own, in their own style:

Liberdade de voo & Elegância na cozinha.

Freedom of flight, and elegance in the kitchen.

01The brief

The whole job was in three words the client added at the end, almost as an aside.

Italian and mafia was decided before I arrived. That part is easy, and it is also the part that has been done ten thousand times. The difficulty was sem ser bobo. Without being silly.

Because Italian mafia, as a look, is a costume. Checkered tablecloth, violin case, a still from The Godfather, cannoli, a man kissing his fingers. Reach for any of it and the brand becomes a theme night. The client sold real food, cooked by hand, in a city where nobody was fooled by a costume.

So the mafia had to arrive without a single mafia image in the frame.

02The turn

Use the grammar, never the fantasy.

The costume lives in pictures. What actually makes a crime family legible is not visual at all, it is how they speak and what they treat as sacred. Oath. Truce. Witness. Silence. Respect. Debt. The table, and who is allowed at it.

That became the rule the whole brand runs on. The mafia enters through vocabulary and behaviour and is banned from the imagery. Not one gun, not one pinstripe suit, not one red and white cloth.

The mascot settles it. The origin film puts a cocky Italian in a kitchen with a curiango named Las, a curiango being a Brazilian nightjar, and makes them partners rather than master and pet. The bird is drawn in silhouette wearing a chef's hat. It is the exact opposite of a gangster, and having it preside over a world of oaths and truces kills the pastiche before it can start.

It also puts the collision inside the story instead of leaving it in the art direction. An Italian and a Brazilian night bird, cooking together, is the brand stated as a plot.

03The naming

Two floors. Italian upstairs is what you buy, Portuguese downstairs is why you are buying it.

Every product carries two names. The upper one is Italian and reads like a menu. The lower one is in the family's own language, and it names the pact you are entering rather than the quantity you are receiving.

The consequence shows up on the combos. A two lasagna box is not a size, it is a relationship. Capo and consigliere. A truce in layers. A table for two, no witnesses. The customer is never sold a volume, they are cast in a role.

04The laws

A preference is an opinion the client can lose by Thursday. A law survives being handed to somebody else.

Four of them, written into the identity document so the brand keeps behaving when I am not in the room.

  • IA Don does not beg. Order now is deleted on sight. An invitation, never a plea.
  • IIThe bird does not talk. It watches. No mascot dialogue, no speech bubbles, no winking.
  • IIIThere are no discounts. There are favours. Price never apologises for itself.
  • IVEvery piece happens at the table, or on the way to it. Nothing floats in a studio void.

The laws, applied

The proof that the rules were doing work is the production content. Real photographs, shot in the actual kitchen, of trays and sauce and hands. Ordinary behind the scenes material, and under this brand it could not be captioned as behind the scenes. It had to be testimony. So each one was published as an article of the code.

05Service

Opening hours are the dullest asset a food brand owns, so they were given three different worlds instead of a table of numbers.

Lunch belongs to the family, and the city is drawn in daylight. Dinner belongs to the Don, and the same city turns violet. After midnight, on Fridays and Saturdays only, there is Madrugada, which is the small hours, and the bird is still flying over it.

Same skyline in all three, same bird, three temperatures. A customer learns the schedule by recognising which world they are standing in.

06Two states

The kitchen sells the same dish hot and frozen, so the grade had to carry the difference before a single word did.

Identical frame, two treatments. The hot line is warm, saturated, the cheese still moving. The freezer line is the same photograph pulled cold, desaturated, hazed over with frost and marked with a snowflake.

Nobody has to read a label to know which one they are buying. The temperature of the image is the label.

07The voice

Three lines went into the identity document as the tuning fork. Everything written afterwards had to sound like them.

  • 01Se não for pra ser o melhor, nem abre a caixa. If it is not going to be the best, do not even open the box.
  • 02Don Curi não faz mágica. Faz comida de verdade. Don Curi does not do magic. He makes real food.
  • 03Você pede pela fome. Volta pelo respeito. You order out of hunger. You come back out of respect.

The essence the document names is Loucura e Elegância, madness and elegance: the technical precision of an Italian kitchen carrying Brazilian irreverence. The reference the client and I settled on was Scorsese, and the shorthand that made everyone agree in one sentence was Jamie Oliver, gangster mode.

Mesa pra dois. Sem testemunhas. A table for two, no witnesses. The pact name doing the selling.

08The honest part

The brand book is the step before the work, and this project went past its own brand book.

The document I wrote asked for black and white, extreme focus on the plate, and a 45 degree angle. Reasonable, and it is what I believed at the time. What actually shipped as the cover is an illustrated landscape in rust, warm, with three planes of depth and no plate in it at all.

The rules were right about behaviour and wrong about surface. That is worth stating plainly rather than quietly reprinting the document as if it had predicted the outcome. A brand platform earns its keep by holding the reasons steady while the surface is allowed to get better than you were.
